Despite conceding that the “lassie” in question “saw a series of raptures,” only the first of which he claims was a “pre-trib translation,” and despite labelling her as “a partial rapturist,” he insists that “Darby borrowed from her, modified her views, and then popularised them under his own name without giving her credit.”212 Such unrestrained allegations not only fail to inflict “a devastating wound on the pre-trib camp,”213 as is claimed, but do not match the portrait we have of Darby from his writings, and from the testimonies of those closest to him. MacPherson’s “breezy journalistic style”214 may be conducive to book selling, but it contributes little to critical research and damages the integrity and reputation of a man whose “one aim” was “the glory of God.”215 John Nelson Darby was a careful student of the Bible who found an exegetical basis for his doctrine of the pretribulation Rapture in the Scriptures, which he consistently maintained had been his sole guide.
